Turkey Trots: Thanksgiving Day Races

Turkey Trots can be an active family outing, a race to train for, or just some offseason conditioning. These six runs meet those needs and offer a little something extra.

Plus, they help you earn your stuffing. And pie.

Las Vegas Turkey Trot

The Las Vegas Turkey Trot is inclusive, with a 1-mile walk and a 5k run/walk, but where it stands out among Turkey Day fun runs is the 12k with a turnaround at the Hoover Dam. An old mining trail provides a steady grade up and back to the dam, passing through six tunnels along the way. The route offers plenty to see, but costumes are encouraged.  And if your post-run plans involve gorging on turkey while watching football, Vegas has a few options.

Western & Southern Thanksgiving Day Race

In its 104th year, the Cincinnati Thanksgiving 10k Run and Walk is as much a tradition as extra helpings. That said, this year’s route has a straighter start and finish, than last’s. The race is about community, incorporating a Goodwill jacket drive into the morning start, and taking donations for 11 charities. That’s a feel-good way to start the day.

Huffing for Stuffing

The Huffing for Stuffing Thanksgiving Day Run in Bozeman, Mont., is a food bank fundraiser with 5k options and a 10k race with prizes for teams. Just a heads up, the course organizers brag that this is a “Montana 10k.”  As if running on snowy connector trail isn’t enough, those unfamiliar might be surprised to find the finish line nearly a half-mile farther  than expected.

Topanga Turkey Trot

Need a break from those urban road races? The Topanga Turkey Trot offers a 5k fun run, a 10k race, and a 15k route that includes 1,200 feet in elevation gain with two hills. Bring along family and friends; even if they jog the fun run while you hit the hills, you’ll all enjoy the same scenery. The races are part of the SoCal XTERRA Trail Run Series.

When: Thursday, Nov. 28; 8 a.m.
Where: Trippet Ranch in Topanga State Park, Calabasas, Cali.

Capital One Bank Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot

After a record turnout in 2012, the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot will try to repeat success this Thanksgiving.  The run is open to all, but the 5k and 8-miler are certified and chip-timed and will be competitive at the front. Organizers made changes to the course and will fence in the start corral. The best part is registration includes a 25-visit membership to the YMCA, which takes away a lot of excuses for not training.

When: Thursday, Nov. 28; 9 a.m.
Where: City Hall Plaza, Dallas, Tex.

Atlanta Half Marathon

If your idea of a trot stretches further than most, consider the Atlanta Half Marathon and Thanksgiving Day 5k. The race starts and finishes at Turner Field, with a course that bobs and weaves its way through the hills of downtown Atlanta. You’ll know you’re about halfway when you get to the aid station handing out Jelly Belly Sports Beans.

When: Thursday, Nov. 28; 7:30 a.m.
Where: Turner Field, 755 Hank Aaron Dr., Atlanta, Ga.
