“The mountains were amazing!” says James MacRae, accountant by trade and ultrarunner by passion, of the Uber Rock 50k course in Vail, Colorado.
With an estimated vertical gain of 5,936 over 31 miles, the course bestowed upon participants panoramic mountain views and rarified air.
With snow-capped mountaintops above and bright orange aspens below, MacRae ran a solid race, finishing in 7:30 — a good time for him, he says, considering the tough conditions. The temperature gauge read 22 degrees Fahrenheit at the start, and the trails were muddy later in the day.
“To ski or to run was the question of the day,” says MacRae.
