January 19th saw numerous Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifiers from the BRC/Adidas race team. This year, the Houston Half doubled as the USA Half Marathon Championships.
For the ladies, Wendy Thomas and Mattie Suver notched qualifying times in the half with their 4th and 6th place respective finishes in a loaded field. Thomas, from Windsor, notched a 1:12.29, while Suver, out of Colorado Springs, finished in 1:13.06. The women remained in a tight pack up front through 15k. Rachel Gioscia-Ryan, from Boulder, ran a PR of over 5 minutes as she clocked 1:16.07 for 32nd.
Brandon Birdsong of Colorado Springs led the BRC men with his 24 place berth in a phenomenal men’s field. Birdsong clocked 1:04.21 over the 13.1 miles. Sean Brown, out of Arvada and a current Physical Therapy student, was just 20 seconds off of the OT qualifier with 1:05.22.
Ian Burrell competed in the marathon where, despite severe cramping in the latter miles, still pulled out a 2:13.26 for a phenomonal 7th place.
Next up for most of these ladies and gents will be the USA Cross Country Championships in Boulder on February 15th, so stay tuned for more great results!
