Indoor track season is in full swing now for the BRC/Adidas race team. The quartet of Alisha Williams, Rochelle Kanuho, Brittni Hutton and Brandon Birdsong spiked it up and went down in altitude this weekend for the Husky Classic in Seattle, WA.
Known as one of the fastest tracks in the nation, Dempsy Fieldhouse is renowned for producing some fast times. Williams is back onto her favorite racing surface as she polished off her marathon season at the NYC Marathon last fall. Getting her wheels back she clocked 15:34 in the 5,000m to get second to her local Colorado Springs training partner, Betsy Saina, of Nike. This is well under the USATF Indoor National qualifying mark for her. Last year, Williams held the world-leading outdoor 5k time of 15:09 before injury, and needless to say such a quick time this early on bodes well for her upcoming season.
She was followed by Rochelle Kanuho, who recently represented the USA at the Bupa Great Edinburg cross country race in Scotland last month. She went under the 16 minute mark in the 5k for the first time her 15:59. Brittni Hutton clocked a solid 16:36, a PR for her track 5k.
Kanuho followed up her stellar 5k performance with a 4:48 mile the following Saturday. Hutton clocked 4:59.
Brandon Birdsong battled through a mile of his 5k before a pre-existing calf injury forced him to DNF. He, along with Kanho and Hutton, will next be targeting the USA Cross Country Championships in 2 weeks.
