Colorado will take the stage this year with the USA Cross Country National Championships in Boulder. Although this year won’t be a World Championship qualifying race, Flatirons Golf Course will still see some of the best talent in the nation spike it up, take to the grass, and vie for top honors and a piece of the $15,000 prize purse for both men and women.
BRC/adidas will have a number of athletes competing in the open men’s, women’s and master’s men’s races.
The open women’s 8k will be a stacked field with the likes of Boulder’s own Jenny Simpson in the hunt for the crown. BRC/adidas will feature Rochelle Kanuho, fresh off of a 5k indoor PR of 15:59 and who ran as part of Team USA at January’s BUPA Great Edinburgh Cross Country race. Along with Kanuho are Mattie Suver, who competed at last year’s World Cross Country Championships, Alisha Williams, with a 15:09 5k PR to her name, Rachel Gioscia-Ryan, Brittni Hutton, Steph Bylander, Christie Foster, Adrian Neal, Sarah Young and Shannon Payne.
The men’s BRC/adidas team, competing over 12k of distance, will showcase Brandon Johnson, Mack McLain, and Sean Brown. Nike runner Chris Derrick will likely contend for the individual victory, but will have some scrappy competition to contend with.
The master’s men will compete over 8k. BRC/adidas will be composed of Simon Gutierrez, Cody Hill, CJ Hitz, Kevin Konczak, Seef Le Roux, and Mark Misch. The team took 5th in the master’s division of the USA Club Cross Country Championships last December. Gutierrez will be one to watch for in the front pack as the multiple-time Team USA Mountain Running member will be vying to the individual win.
So get out to Boulder to watch some of the nation’s best. The women’s masters will kick things off at 8 a.m., followed by the master’s men at 8:50, junior women at 10, junior men at 10:45, open women at 11:30, open men at 12:15, and the community 4k at 1:15.
