Tales from the Trails: Keystone

Snake River in Keystone

Winter views along the Snake River in Keystone

Winter in Summit County is tough to beat.  From skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and yes even trail running, it has something for everyone.

Why do we run through the winter?  We run to enjoy the beautiful views and the silence, and to experience terrain that we can only tackle in the winter months.  Rabbit tracks were the only footprints on the trail today, so we plowed through the powder to create our own first tracks.

Winter running is all about layering.  With some thermal running tights, merino wool or a highly breathable base layer, a second layer and a shell, plus some gloves and a hat, we were good to go.  The chill that our hands and feet felt at first was quickly replaced with warmth once we got going.  After several miles of fluffy goodness, we were ready for the lodge and a hot coffee.
