I know it isn’t exactly our territory here in the D.C. area, but being from New Jersey, Holmdel Park in Holmdel, NJ holds a special place in my heart. While I was home for the holidays, a couple of former teammates and I made the trip up from Haddonfield, NJ to Holmdel for the first time since high school to see if something was drastically different since kids are running a whole heckuva lot faster there than they were back in our day (all of nine years ago).
And much to our chagrin, it really wasn’t all that different. The Bowl is still The Bowl (still not my favorite hill in the world), the course was still mostly cinder, overall there didn’t seem to be any huge changes to the course that would lead to guys being way faster. Apparently, we just weren’t as fast as we thought we were, which seems to be a running theme as we get older. On the positive and way less discouraging and emotionally scarring side, we got in a long run on some great trails we weren’t allowed to run on in high school and a much anticipated stop to Jersey Freeze in Freehold, NJ for some milkshakes and burgers. But still, this getting old thing sucks.
