Michael’s Running Term of the Day: Fartlek

A Swedish for “speed play;” in the most basic sense, a fartlek workout is one where you combine continuous running with interval work.  A fartlek workout can be as simple as starting a run out at your easy pace, then picking up to your 5K pace for the length between 2 telephone poles, then dropping back to your easy pace for a distance and perhaps running your spring pace for the length between 2 poles before recovering again.  Fartleks are fairly unstructured by nature, with many coaches simply running out instructions such as “slow,” “medium,” or “fast,” at random intervals as their athletes run around a track.  Benefits of fartleks include increased strength and endurance and an opportunity to work on race tactics such as pace variation.Fartlek
