Jennie’s story

My older sister, Molly, lost her life to brain cancer in 2008 at the age of 36. My brother, John, succumbed to the same type of cancer at age 32 in 2009. My sister, Mary, died on February 7 of last year from melanoma after 5 years and enduring an incredible amount of treatment. She was only 35 years old. I run for them, to honor their strength and determination. I run to raise funds that will help researchers find a cure because cancer needs to be stopped. Because no family should have to endure this. Running to help raise funds is one thing, it is SOME thing, I can do to help find effective treatments and eventually a cure. It is something I can do when rendered almost helpless by a cruel and devastating disease like cancer.  They never gave up, and I have made the choice to follow their lead and not give up either. Molly, Mary and John embodied what it means to be good, to be strong.

I also run for my parents, my sister, for my nephews and niece who lost their mom, for my children and for the rest of my extended family who have felt these devastating losses alongside us, because this disease reaches far beyond those who have been diagnosed. I run for other family members and friends who have been touched by this disease.  Though it was once just a hobby, running for a cause that I believe to be profoundly influential has changed my perspective and outlook.

My goal this year is to raise $26,200.

$1000 per mile.

These dollars are making a difference as researchers work to find effective treatments for cancer, but there are miles to go.  100% of all gifts will fund the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute which is widely recognized as one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind. Based on a rigorous and highly selective process, the Barr Program funds the brightest, most creative scientists making basic research discoveries that are transforming cancer treatment. Barr Investigators have made numerous major breakthroughs resulting in improved survival rates and quality of life for thousands of patients everywhere.
