New Jersey Turkey Trots 101

Thanksgiving is approaching quickly, and you might be considering registering for a turkey trot…since that seems to be the preferred way to start your holiday in these spheres. The amount of turkey trots in your area might be overwhelming to you, so we’ve chosen our favorites and compiled them here to help you decide which one you should run this year!

1. Trinity Turkey Trot

Where: Trinity Church, Mercer Street, Princeton, NJ

When: Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 8:30 AM

You should run this if you want to bring the entire family, see your friends and neighbors, test your fitness (or not), get a medal from a priest.

Last year’s winning times: 16:12 (M), 19:04 (F) (2012 results)

Field size: 900+

 

2.) CEA/Johanna Foods Turkey Trotjohanna

Where: Flemington, NJ

When: Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 9:45 AM (5k run), 9:15 AM (2k fitness walk)

You should run this if you want to be a part of one of the largest turkey trots in the state, run a fast time, bring your family and friends

Last year’s winning times: 14:50 (M), 16:46 (F) (2012 results)

Field size: 4,000+

 

3.) Dick Meighan Memorial Run

Where: Upper Saddle River, NJ

When: Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 9:00 AM

You should run this to benefit the local community, honor late coach Dick Meighan, be a Guinness World Record contender! In 2013, the race is partnering with BSX Athletics to make an attempt to snag the record for the most participants in a Thanksgiving Day race!

Last year’s winning times: 15:21 (M), 18:36 (F) (2012 results)

Field size: 2,200+

 

4.) Westfield 5 Mile Turkey Trot

Where: Westfield, NJ

When: Saturday, November 30, 11:15 AM (1 mile at 10:30 AM)

You should run this if you want to sleep in, you want to run another turkey trot on actual Thanksgiving Day (or do something else, if you think of a better plan), a 5k is too short…or too long (see: PracticeHard Mile).

Last year’s winning times: 5 Mile: 25:56 (M), 31:10 (F), 1 Mile: 4:49 (M), 6:45 (F) (2012 5 mile results, 1 mile results)

Field size: 900 (5 Mile), 350+ (1 Mile)

 

5.) Burn the Bird 5k

Where: River Road Park, Bedminster, NJ

When: Saturday, November 30, 9:00 AM

You should run this if you want to be a part of an inaugural race, support the Cancer Stinks Children’s Foundation.

Field size/winning times: TBD!

 

6.) Chatham Turkey Trot (5k & 1 Mile Family Fun Run)

Where: Chatham, NJ

When: Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 9:00 AM

You should run this if you’re looking for a smaller race, you want to support a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization, you want to give your speedy kids their moment of fame (there’s a separate boys’ and girls’ division for under 13-year-olds!).

Field size: 435

 

7.) Morris Township Thanksgiving Day 5K/1M Turkey Trot

Where: Morris Township, Ginty Field

When: Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 8:30 AM

You should run this race if you want clocks at every mile and instant results via your smartphone, DJ entertainment, good competition.

Last year’s winning times: 15:37 (M), 17:19 (F) (2012 results)

Field size: 2,200+
