Meet Alex Tarlow, community marketing outreach coordinator for the New Jersey Running Company stores.
Although he works mainly at the Westfield Running Company, Alex can be found at stores and running events around New Jersey. Hired in 2006, he started his athletic career on the soccer field, but soon realized he should simplify the equation and joined the Westfield High School cross country and track teams.
He focused on middle-distance races though his heart yearned for a shot at high jump. Nevertheless, his success in the middle-distance events took him to the University of Massachusetts where he continued his track career and graduated successfully. Now a post-collegiate runner, Alex continues to hop in local 5ks and the occasional half-marathon. After his first marathon, he says “one and done!” (but we’ll see).
Alex’s favorite aspect of working at running stores: ”We get to inspire people to take their first step towards a 5k, help the marathoner work out training kinks, and provide the means for the elite athlete qualify for their next race or hit a new PR. We are able to talk with a range of people with an overlapping enjoyment for the sport of running.”
“Our stores plan exciting events that are fresh ideas in the running community and our team members are full of energy and enthusiasm.”
Alex’s tips for running in New Jersey: “Being a Westfield local I’ll riff on some secret trails and loops. Checkout Tamaques Park off Lamberts Mill Rd.; this park has a .8 cinder track and is surrounded by quiet, low traffic streets. Search MapMyRun to find the local HS XC course to tackle Prefontaine Trail and run a rolling 3.1 course. Brightwood Park off of Prospect Ave. has a quiet 1000-meter loop on manageable trails — great way to add some tempo or change of scenery for any suburban run.”
What you might not know about Alex: “He enjoys a love/hate relationship with golf. Is a Drummer. And his favorite food is Shake n’ Bake!”
