The Brooks Heater Hog LS is Long Sleeve Technical Running top. I like the thumb holes, which help me to keep my hands from getting quite as cold. This is a new item from Brooks for winter 2013/14, This technology is similar to Mizuno’s Breath Thermo top. The fiber itself reactively generates heat back toward your skin when it is contacted by your sweat! Hoooray for Science!
The Heater Hog is a great top to wear on days where the temperature is 45 degrees or below. Most often I find this will serve as base layer underneath a light wind resistant jacket (like the Brooks LSD lite Jacket) on days where the temperature are 30-40 degrees with 10-20mph winds. Of course, if you’re dedicated and sub freezing temps don’t stop you, wearing a more insulted jacket and possibly a thin short sleeve layer over the Heater Hog will work well.
On this morning’s 30min easy run (temperature was about 34), I wore the Heater Hog with a light wind jacket over top, by the midway point of my run I was actually a bit too warm. I anticipate wearing this under a heavier weight 1/2 zip (like the Brooks Infiniti 1/2 zip) for most of my cold/long runs.
